Mums prefer full sun to partial shade, and need to be planted in well-drained soil. Water daily or when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Be sure to avoid wetting the flowers and leaves! Flowers can be removed as they begin to fade to enhance the appearance of the plant.
To overwinter in the garden, plant in well-drained soil. When the blooms begin to fade, trim them off using sharp scissors or floral shears. Removing the flowers will ensure the plant uses any extra energy on establishing a strong root system. Keep the soil well watered until the first frost. After the foliage of the plant has died back, cut the remaining stems of the mums to 3 to 4 inches above the ground. Spread a thick layer of mulch over the plant once the ground has frozen. This will insulate the root system from rapid temperature fluctuations that could harm the plant over the winter.
